The W3C Media Annotations Working Group has recently posted drafts of its Ontology for Media Resource 1.0 and API for Media Resource 1.0 efforts. They have also updated the Use Cases document to reflect some of the intentions of these projects. The basic goal of the Working Group is to produce an API and domain model for handling the explosion of media content on the Web.

The SOA Working Group contributed to the Open Group a draft version of SOA Ontology 2.0. The standard defines a formal ontology for Service Oriented Architecture. The ontology is written in the Web Ontology Language (OWL) and contains classes and properties corresponding to the important concepts of SOA.

Ontologies and Ontological management have become more popular as enterprise architecture has gained ground in organizations. As tool support has become available and the semantic and ontological concepts are being understood, more players, like the UMBEL project, the AKSW group, and consultant Dan McCreary have come to the table with contributions.
