SOA "Most Despised Buzzword"

According to a Network Computing reader poll, "SOA" is the most despised tech buzzword, leading at 21% (with "virtualization" being a close second with 19%). The statistical relevance, as well as the seriousness of the question and answers can be questioned, but it's still interesting to see SOA come out at the top.

The "hype cycle curve" created by the analysts from Gartner contains a phase known as the "Trough of Disillusionment":

Technologies enter the "trough of disillusionment" because they fail to meet expectations and quickly become unfashionable. Consequently, the press usually abandons the topic and the technology.

Whether SOA is just undergoing the same phases as any other hyped technology, or whether this poll is a symptom of a larger problem, is open to debate.

It might be worth noting that only 755 people responded to the poll - and while its true "SOA" continues to be shoved down our throats, I think a quick look at SOA-related book sales, SOA article responses, and SOA-related publication downloads shows there is a strong industry movement to understand exactly what this buzzword really means (it's a breakfast cereal, right?)

Most despised buzzword? Have these 755 folks not read the facts at Jeez people - SOA can beat Ninjas and Jedis! Except for today (dec. 5th). I'm pretty sure a Ninja is unbeatable on national ninja day.
