Sun today announced the release of GlassFish Tools Bundle for Eclipse, which provides an Eclipse environment to create and provision JEE applications into GlassFish from within Eclipse. The bundle doesn't refer to an OSGi bundle, but rather a bundling of a number of Eclipse tools:

  • Eclipse 3.4.1
  • Java EE IDE
  • GlassFish v2.1
  • GlassFish v3 Prelude
  • (optionally) JDK 1.6

There are instructions available for installing the GlassFish adaptors into an existing Eclipse install using an existing GlassFish instance. Early bloggers have provided notes on how to install and use the tool.

Sun is also a Gold Sponsor of EclipseCon, and has delivered talks on GlassFish integration (the latest version, v3 Prelude, uses OSGi under the covers). By making it as easy to use from within Eclipse as NetBeans, the availability and userbase of GlassFish will not be limited by choice of IDE.

The blog comments note that the NetBeans and Eclipse plugins will continue to be supported and that although the current documented version is 0.9.9, the release process to convert this into an official 1.0.0 release is underway.
