Apache Geronimo 3.0-beta-1 is now fully Java EE 6 Certified. Geronimo joins the rank of GlassFish 3 as an open source server that has passed both Java EE 6.0 Full Profile and Web Profile certification tests. JBoss Application Server 7 is only Java EE 6.0 Web Profile certified at this time. Geronimo 3 has also updated its kernel to use OSGi, based on the Apache Karaf OSGi runtime, and supports the Aries programming model.

Geronimo 3 is available in 6 distributions. The first distribution is Geronimo with Tomcat 7 and Axis2, and is Java EE 6 Full Profile certified. The second distribution is Geronimo with Tomcat 7, and is Java EE 6 Web Profile certified. The rest of the distributions are non-certified. They are: Geronimo with Jetty 8 and CXF, Geronimo with Jetty 8, minimal Geronimo (Little-G) with Jetty 8, and minimal Geronimo (Little-G) with Tomcat 7.

Here are the Java EE 6 technologies that Geronimo 3 fully supports. For more details about each technology, including download links to the each specification, please visit the Java EE 6 Technologies page.

Geronimo 3 has also updated its kernel based on OSGi technology. It supports OSGi Core Specification 4.3 and part of OSGi Enterprise Specification 4.2, including the Configuration Admin Service Specification, Blueprint Container specification, Web Applications specification, JNDI Services specification, JPA Service specification, and JMX Management Model specification. Geronimo uses Apache Karaf, an OSGi based runtime which provides a lightweight container onto which various components and applications can be deployed. Geronimo also supports Apache Aries, a project that consists of a set of pluggable Java components enabling an enterprise OSGi application programming model.

You can download the Geronimo 3 source and binaries for both Windows and Unix (including Linux, Mac OS X) operating systems. You will need Java SE 1.6.0+ or greater. For more information, visit the Geronimo User Guide. You can also subscribe to the Geronimo mailing list.
