Azul Systems and Gil Tene have been named Java Community Process (JCP) Member of the Year at the JavaOne 2013 conference, held last week in San Francisco. The award recognizes the corporate or individual member who has made the most positive impact on the Java community in the past year.

"We are honored and delighted to see this recognition of Gil's efforts on behalf of the global Java community," said Scott Sellers, Azul Systems President and CEO, in the press release. "Gil is a passionate advocate for Java, a compelling and popular speaker, and his amazing innovation and creativity significantly contribute to the evolution of Java and the JVM."

A JCP Executive Committee election cycle is currently underway with the ballot due to open on 15 October for two weeks. Both Azul and Twitter, elected in 2011, are again among the candidates standing.

Amongst other things, Executive Committee members are responsible for selecting the JSRs for development within the JCP, and the approval of draft Specifications after Public Review. They also give final approval to completed Specifications and their associated Reference Implementations and Testing Compatibility Kits. In addition, members review and provide guidance on proposed licensing terms of JSRs, and have a number of other duties defined in the JCP Process Document.

Beyond the regular processes, the ongoing JCP.next project is re-shaping the JCP, and the next year is likely to be critical. Therefore if you are eligible to vote, we strongly encourage you to do so.
