Survey on the Need for an Agile Manifesto 2.0

This item in japanese

The survey on Agile Manifesto 2.0 investigates whether the Manifesto for Agile Software Development is still relevant and effective in today’s environment. Kamlesh Ravlani, an Agile / Lean Coach and Scrum Trainer, created this survey to gain insight into the need for change in the Agile Manifesto. The survey is open to anyone who has experience with and an opinion about the Agile Manifesto.

InfoQ interviewed Kamlesh Ravlani about why he started the survey, who can participate in the survey, and how the results of the survey will be shared.

InfoQ: What made you decide to start a survey on Agile Manifesto 2.0?

Kamlesh Ravlani: It’s been 15 years since the Agile Manifesto emerged out of the ideas of 17 lightweight framework practitioners who met at a ski resort in Snowbird, Utah. The 10th year anniversary of Agile Manifesto retrospective was conducted in 2011, in which the key focus for next 10 years was discussed. During the last five years since this retrospective, there has been sharp uptick in the rate of the change in the business markets. Enterprises face higher volatility and uncertainty around customers and customer needs. The size and complexity of products has significantly increased. The technology has changed and has thoroughly penetrated almost every industry domain, fueling the rate at which new enterprises can be setup and the existing ones can potentially be evolved or uprooted.

And you may be familiar with the recent buzz in the Agile community around the need to update the Agile Manifesto. Many agilists have been vocal about it and some have floated their own versions of the manifesto. It’s being published through articles, raised in keynote speeches and discussed on social media.

I’m unbiased and curious to explore what's the real need that is driving this conversation about upgrading the manifesto, and is it the sentiment of the broader community or only a few?

Through this survey, I’m inviting the worldwide Agile community to collectively explore if there is a need for Agile Manifesto 2.0.

InfoQ: Who can participate in this survey?

Ravlani: I’m inviting all Agile practitioners, leaders of organization, Agile coaches, trainers, thought leaders, and Agile Manifesto signatories to share their opinion via this survey. Anyone having 5+ years of experience in this field, who understands the Agile Manifesto and has an opinion about it.

InfoQ: How’s the survey doing so far?

Ravlani: In less than a week, the survey has already attracted insightful responses from many industry thoughts leaders and leaders of organizations. Most responses are from coaches immediately followed by practitioners from over a dozen countries.

Interestingly enough the initial responses stood at 75% of the respondents saying, yes, there is a need for Agile Manifesto 2.0; currently the responses are 44% Yes, 53% No and 3% Other. It’s fluctuating with more responses coming in.

I would like to collect 2000+ responses, to make it a significant number. At that size the data will be difficult to ignore.

The survey is open till September 15th. Share your opinion on the agile manifesto today, if you haven’t done so already.

InfoQ: How will you share the results of the survey?

Ravlani: The idea is to share back as much insight as possible with the Agile community. I intend to publish the analysis on major portals such as Infoq.com, ScrumAlliance.org, Pulse, etc. and present the insights at major conferences.

InfoQ: What's the next step after the results are published?

Ravlani: If the community decides there is a need for Agile Manifesto 2.0, I see it to be a crowd sourced manifesto. In that case, a follow up survey / wiki site will be setup to collect specific input. Many of the survey respondents are sharing their email id, so these people will be invited and will be among the first hear.

If the community collectively decides there is no need for changing or revising the manifesto, all their ideas and thoughts will be shared with the community.
