Scott Farquhar, co-CEO and co-founder of Atlassian, announced on September 4 that Atlassian has launched a new product called Jira Ops and that they will acquire OpsGenie.

As described in Jira Ops & OpsGenie: powerful incident management, Jira Ops is a new product which organizations can use for resolving incidents. It also provides support to learn from incidents and take preventive actions.

Organizations using DevOps can use Jira Ops to coordinate the work of response teams during major incidents and support the communication between professionals from software development and operations.

Jira Ops is based on Jira´s workflow engine. It integrates with other Atlassian products like Statuspage, Jira Software, Jira Service Desk, and Confluence, and with non-Atlassian products like Pagerduty, Slack, and with the newly acquired product OpsGenie.

Recently Atlassian announced a strategic partnership with Slack. Jira Ops provides integrations with Slack; for instance, users can use Slack channels to discuss issues and create traceable communication between those involved in solving the incident. It is also possible to push back information from Slack into the Jira Ops timeline to keep communication centralized.

At the Atlassian Summit Europe 2018, Scott Farquhar presented their new product Jira Ops. He described it as "one place to respond, resolve, and learn from every incident". It comes with a standard response workflow and integrated post-mortem support to learn from incidents, he said.

Farquhar mentioned that Atlassian is including their own internal incident response handbook with Jira Ops, making it possible for customers to learn from and apply incident response practices that are used at Atlassian.

Jira Ops can also be used together with Confluence to analyze incidents and document and share the learnings to prevent similar incidents in the future.

At the European Summit, Atlassian also announced that they are entering into an agreement to acquire OpsGenie, an incident alerting solution. Farquhar stated that "prompt and reliable alerting is the critical first step in incident response", which is what OpsGenie adds to Jira Ops.

CEO and co/founder Berkay Mollamustafaoğlu mentioned the expected benefits in the blog post OpsGenie joins Atlassian:

We believe that all aspects of incident management can be improved with streamlined communication and collaboration between teams. Today, we are also thrilled to be an integral part of the new Jira Ops offering. Jira Ops will provide a better way for software and IT teams to manage incidents by providing all the key details, from alerting to resolution, in one place.

Jira Ops is now available through Atlassian’s early access program. Atlassian is working with the OpsGenie team to further integrate their products.
