Google's Apigee API Platform Enhanced with API Monitoring and "Extensions" to Connect GCP Services

Leia em Português

Google Cloud's "full lifecycle" API management platform, Apigee, provides customers control over and visibility into the API's that connect applications and data across their enterprises and clouds. Recently, Google announced the general availability of various new Apigee capabilities, such as Apigee API monitoring, Apigee extensions, and Apigee hosted targets.

In November 2016 Google acquired Apigee and brought the service into its Cloud platform as Apigee API Platform. The service has evolved to become a dominant leader in the 2018 Magic Quadrant for Full Life Cycle API Management. To further drive the evolution, Google enhanced the Apigee API service by adding more monitoring capabilities, adding new extensions, and supporting hosted targets.

The announcement blog post states that with the new monitoring capability customers can now "accurately and quickly identify the root-cause of API issues" based on contextual insights into API performance—whether in a developer application, an API proxy, or a backend service. Moreover, Google claim that the new capabilities will reduce the mean-time-to-diagnosis (MTTD) significantly, giving operations teams more time to prioritize and resolve API-related issues.

With the addition of new extensions to Apigee, users will now be able to access other Google Cloud services like Cloud Firestore, Pub/Sub, Cloud Storage and Spanner via the service. Moreover, users can easily interact with these services and connect to them through a policy interface. Alberto Mardomingo, DevOps engineer at MásMóvil, said in the blog post:

Apigee’s extensions feature enables us to seamlessly connect to cloud services like Google Stackdriver. It enables us to focus on the development of our APIs, abstracting away the complexity of connecting and interacting with multiple cloud services. Our API developers can simply pick the policy from a first-class interface, simplifying development and significantly cutting back on release times. We have been able to configure the extension once and use it everywhere, driving reusability across development teams.

Google also announced a new extension to access Informatica’s integration-Platform-as-a-Service (iPaaS) offering. With this extension, customers will be able to use policies to discover and invoke business integration processes that are defined in Informatica’s Integration Cloud.

Lastly, the support for hosted targets will provide customers with a simple way to add more business logic to their APIs than previously possible. By leveraging the App Engine, users can with hosted targets run Node.js applications in a native runtime environment – meaning they can deploy applications in a native, secure, scalable, and isolated environment where Edge API proxies can call them as target services.
