Google and VMware Establish Partnership, Enabling VMware Migrations to Google Cloud Platform

In a recent blog post, Google announced support for running VMware vSphere-based workloads in Google Cloud Platform (GCP). This capability is enabled through a partner solution by CloudSimple and leverages VMWare’s software-defined data center (SDCC) technologies. Using this approach, organizations can bridge their GCP cloud computing investments with their existing VMWare investments and take advantage of Google’s data analytics, AI and machine learning cloud services.

Organizations leveraging the CloudSimple solution will have native access to the full VMware stack, including vCenter, vSAN and NSX-T. In addition, Google will provide front-line support for the solution, while working closely with CloudSimple, to ensure an enterprise-grade SLA is maintained.

This partnership was established due to customer demand. Sanjay Poonen, chief operating officer at VMware, explains:

Our partnership with Google Cloud has always been about addressing customers’ needs, and we’re excited to extend the partnership to enable our mutual customers to run VMware workloads on VMware Cloud Foundation in Google Cloud Platform. With VMware on Google Cloud Platform, customers will be able to leverage all of the familiarity and investment protection of VMware tools and training as they execute on their cloud strategies, and rapidly bring new services to market and operate them seamlessly and more securely across a hybrid cloud environment.

From Google’s perspective, they have customers running enterprise workloads like SAP and Oracle. For organizations to migrate those workloads to GCP, they need a supported solution. Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, explains why this partnership is essential in addressing customer needs:

We are committed to working closely with our partners to deliver the solutions and products customers need to solve business issues and innovate in new areas. In partnership with VMware, we are committed to making Google Cloud the best place to run VMware workloads.

Google and VMware have collaborated on multiple projects in the past including Google Cloud integrations for VMware NSX Service Mesh and SD-Wan by VeloCloud, Google Cloud’s Anthos on VMware vSphere and a Google Cloud plug-in for VMware vRealize Automation. This new partnership builds on-top of their co-delivered integrated solutions.

This is not the first partnership that VMware has created with a hyper-scale cloud provider. VMware first established a partnership with AWS back in October 2016. More recently, VMware announced a partnership with Microsoft to bring supported VMware architectures to the Azure cloud. As part of the Microsoft partnership, CloudSimple was also involved in the designing, development and operation of the platform.

Google Cloud VMware Solution by CloudSimple will be available in the Google Cloud Marketplace later this year. Interested customers can subscribe to upcoming announcements.
