AWS Announces the General Availability of the Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS

Bookmarks

Recently AWS announced the general availability of Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS (ROSA), which provides a new managed service that makes it easier for Red Hat OpenShift customers to build, scale, and manage containerized applications on AWS. The service offers a fully-managed OpenShift service with joint support from AWS and Red Hat.

AWS built ROSA in partnership with Red Hat to allow customers to migrate some or all of their existing Red Hat deployments over to AWS. The service provides an integrated experience for cluster creation, a consumption-based billing model, and a single invoice for AWS deployments. Martin Beeby, a principal advocate for Amazon Web Services, wrote in an AWS news blog post on the GA announcement of ROSA:

If you’re already familiar with Red Hat OpenShift, you can accelerate your application development process by leveraging standard APIs and existing Red Hat OpenShift tools for your AWS deployments. You’ll also be able to take advantage of the wide range of AWS compute, database, analytics, machine learning, networking, mobile, and other services to improve customer agility, rate of innovation, and scalability.

Users can create a cluster with ROSA by first enabling it in their AWS account. Subsequently, through a downloadable ROSA Command line, Interface (CLI) installs execute commands to verify permissions, log in with AWS credentials, and create a cluster like:

rosa init

rosa create cluster --cluster-name=newsblogcluster

Once the cluster is up, it will be visible within the Red Hat OpenShift Cluster manager console and allow users to configure an Identity Provider in the console, create admins, and generally administer the cluster.

In a RedHat press release on the General Availability of Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS, Bob Wise, GM Kubernetes, AWS said:

Increasingly, customers are turning to containers to improve application velocity and portability, and they’re growing to rely on technologies like Red Hat OpenShift and AWS that make it easier to deploy containerized applications. ROSA gives these customers the ability to seamlessly run containers on AWS using familiar Red Hat OpenShift APIs and tooling, and integrates the full breadth and depth of AWS services to build, scale, and manage their workloads.

Also, Sanchit Vir Gogia, chief analyst, founder & CEO of Greyhound Research, stated in a tweet:

Super effort here by @RedHat to have launched a managed service on @awscloud. Very valuable to end-user clients:

1/ Much needed option for a hybrid infra

2/ Low cost to get started on #OpenShift

3/ Much lesser operational complexities

Currently, the Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS is available in various regions in the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Furthermore, the pricing details are available on the pricing page (hourly, pay-as-you-go model, and annual commitments). And lastly, Mani Chandrasekaran, a principal solutions architect, Containers at Amazon Web Services (AWS), wrote a more detailed article (unofficial guide for newbies) on steps to follow based upon official documentation.
