The third annual JakartaOne Livestream virtual conference will go live on December 7th, 2021, with the first of 12 one-hour sessions starting at 6:00am EST preceded by a welcome reception by Tanja Obradovic and Ivar Grimstad at 5:45am EST. Focused primarily on Jakarta EE- and MicroProfile-related topics, these sessions include keynotes and 15-minute slots, named Studio Jakarta EE, delivered by a host of Java luminaries. Developers can expect to see topics on: Jakarta EE 9.1/10, MicroProfile 4.1/5.0, GlassFish, Java 17, individual Jakarta EE specifications, microservices, and a showcase of applications developed with Jakarta EE.
The JakartaOne Livestream 2021 program committee includes: Tanja Obradovic, Jakarta EE program manager at Eclipse, Ivar Grimstad, Jakarta EE developer advocate at Eclipse, Otavio Santana, distinguished software engineer at Zup Innovation, Ivan St. Ivanov, senior programmer at VIDA Software, Dalia Abo Sheasha, Java developer advocate at JetBrains, Jan Westerkamp, managing director at Sensor Aktor GmbH, and Michael Redlich, senior research technician at a petrochemical research company. Hailley Seed, virtual event specialist at Eclipse, coordinates all the behind-the-scenes activities between the program committee and the speakers.
Notable speakers for the one-hour sessions include: Rudy De Busscher, product manager at Payara; Emily Jiang, Liberty microservice architect and advocate at IBM; Mary Grygleski, developer advocate at IBM; Dmitry Aleksandrov, software developer 5 at Oracle; Adam Bien, Java SE/EE freelancer and author of several books; Bruno Baptista, senior Java consultant and principal engineer at Talkdesk; and Dmitry Kornilov, director of software development at Oracle.
The opening keynote, scheduled for 11:45am EST, will be delivered by Mike Milinkovich, executive director at the Eclipse Foundation. An industry keynote of Jakarta EE vendors follows with panelists: Alasdair Nottingham, Open Liberty lead architect and WebSphere chief architect at IBM; Steve Millidge, CEO at Payara; Will Lyons, senior director, WebLogic Server product management at Oracle; David Blevins, CEO at Tomitribe; and Tetiana Fydorenchyk, director of global product marketing at Virtuozzo.
Before pandemic-induced on-line virtual conferences, the inaugural JakartaOne Livestream 2019, designed as a global event, was held on September 10th, 2019 in conjunction with the formal release of Jakarta EE 8. This was an experiment originated by the Eclipse Foundation through Tanja Obradovic. Reza Rahman, principal program manager, Java on Azure at Microsoft, led the 2019 program committee. Rahman was asked about the differences in coordinating a virtual event to a more traditional in-person event, telling InfoQ:
The core spirit of running a conference is essentially the same - learning. You still basically need to do the same stuff - outline a vision, select content, construct the program, manage the event, register attendees and get the word out. I think the primary difference is not needing to deal with a physical venue. That said, you still need to do vendor management of the online platform itself. For our goals, virtual was the right choice. It will help us reach a broad developer base faster.
Since then, other regional JakartaOne-related events were held including: JakartaOne Japan 2020, JakartaOne Livestream Cloud Native for Java (CN4J), JakartaOne 2021 in Turkish, JakartaOne 2021 in Spanish and JakartaOne 2021 in Portuguese. Jakarta EE 9, released in November 2020, was considered a foundation for innovation to drive new features in Jakarta EE 10 and beyond. Jakarta EE 9.1, released in May 2021, was the first incremental point release in which developers were able to: develop and deploy Jakarta EE 9.1 applications on JDK 11 and JDK 8; take advantage of new Java SE 11 features and new technologies added since Java SE 8; move existing Jakarta EE 9 applications to Java SE 11 without changes; and migrate existing Java EE and Jakarta EE 8 applications to Jakarta EE 9.1 using the same straightforward process available for migration to Jakarta EE 9.
The Jakarta EE Working Group has been working on Jakarta EE 10 and has defined the first quarter of 2022 for a GA release. The MicroProfile Working Group has been working on MicroProfile 5.0 and is planning a GA release in December 2021. MicroProfile 5.0-RC2 is available now.
