Understanding Real-time Conversations on Facebook

Janet Wiener talks about the Chorus of Facebook conversations – the aggregated, anonymized voice of the people – which leads to incredible insights. To do that, Facebook built a data pipeline that produces visual graphs within 10 seconds of content production. Wiener describes how they extract the Chorus in real time.

Janet Wiener is a software engineer at Facebook. She has worked on a variety of projects at Facebook, including Scuba, a fast in-memory data store; Chorus, a real-time data pipeline for reporting what people are saying in aggregate on Facebook; and Quick Promotion, a tool for running promotions on behalf of Facebook.
