WebLogic Server 10.3 technology preview released by BEA systems includes a HTTP Pub/Sub Server for web based clients to send and receive asynchronous messages over HTTP. Other new features in this release include modular server component installation and startup, and application deployments using the new "FastSwap" feature.

Today Oracle confirmed that it has made a $6.7 billion dollar bid to buy BEA, according to various news media. The offer is for $17 a share, a 25% increase over BEA's previous $13 a share price range. Shares in BEA were trading at an avg of $13 before the announcement and are now trading at nearly $18 (as of 10:20am ET).

Apache OpenJPA has been gaining momentum in the JEE world, having been adopted by BEA as the EJB3 JPA implementation in WebLogic Server 10 and in the most recent EJB3 Feature Pack for IBM WebSphere Application Server. OpenJPA started its life in BEA's Kodo product, whose code was donated to the ASF in 2006; the project just recently graduated from the Apache Incubator as well.
