The Apache Geronimo project has passed a significant milestone in that their latest release candidate (2.0-M6-rc1) has passed all tests in the Java Enterprise Edition 5.0 Compatibility Test Suite, making it the first open source application server other than Glassfish to pass the tests.

One of the top items listed in the new Geronimo 1.1 release is plugin support. Plugins are touted as being easy to install, automatically downloading dependencies, and eliminating the need for server restarts. With this release of Geronimo you can finally run it on Sun Java 1.5 VM, as long as you don't require CORBA. Another notable change from the 1.0 release is that Geronimo now is available in two distributions, one full and certified J2EE distribution and one "stripped down" distribution that only incudes a minimal installation with a Jetty or Tomcat http server.
