In this presentation, Michele Sliger, a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) and a certified Project Management Professional (PMP), talks about introducing Agile to a waterfall type of organization and the hurdles to be cleared. There are times when the software development division becomes agile while the rest of the organization maintains its former non-agile approach to product development. Michele shows what can be the difficulties met in such an environment and what can be done to overcome them.

Michele talks about the hurdles that agile teams face in a waterfall enterprise and how to clear them. The areas covered are:

  • Management
  • Business

  • Cultural
  • Resource Management
  • Vendors and Customers
  • Facilities & Tooling
  • Cost Accounting & Status Reporting
  • Auditors & Assessors
  • Communications
  • Miscellaneous

Michele also offers ten tips for an Agile/Waterfall cooperative:

  1. Find an Executive Champion
  2. Socialize, Don’t Evangelize
  3. Use the Power of the Backlog
  4. Jump Right In, the Water’s Fine
  5. Use the “Barely Sufficient”Guideline
  6. Invite Non-Agile Representatives to all Agile Planning Meetings
  7. Establish a Rhythm of Inspection and Adaptation
  8. Send Agility Up the Chain
  9. Pay Attention to Behaviors
  10. Include Everyone in the Project Retrospective

The entire presentation is 1h 14 minutes long.

The presentation "Agile in the Waterfall Enterprise" by Michele Sliger is not working for me.

It stops when it gets to 33 minutes and a half. Is there a problem with the presentation?

Great presentation. I liked the emphasis on the values behind agile as opposed to the lingo and practices themselves. Thank you.

Agile Adoption - How to cross the Chasm?

    by Udayan Banerjee

In my opinion there are following management challanges for agile adoption:
    1. Funding: How is project sanctioned?
    2. Interaction: Do stakeholders trust each other?
    3. Defect: What is a defect?
    4. Success: How is it measured?
