On November 6, 2008 JetBrains released IntelliJ IDEA 8, their awarding winning IDE, which InfoQ had reported about several months ago.  This official release of IntelliJ IDEA 8 includes several features not mentioned previously, including:

  • SQL Support - allows database scripts to be edited and queries ran from within the IDE, plus coding assistance for several SQL dialects
  • Improved Java Support - new code inspections, new tools for unit testing, smarter code completion, Dataflow to This, and 7 new refactorings
  • Support for the latest Seam framework
  • RESTful Web Services Support

There are many, many more features, improvements, and fixes included which are all listed here.  Once again JetBrains shows their commitment to creating a development tool for developers that works and responds just as well as it does in Java as it does with other languages.  For Flex developers that use Adobes' Flex Builder, it's worth trying out the Flex support added to IntelliJ IDEA 8, especially if you don't use the GUI designer in Flex Builder.

All in all, IntelliJ IDEA continues to improve and provide state of the art features that many developers are looking for.

There is a good Scala plugin for IDEA. It also works on Diana. =)

One of the developers of IntelliJ informed me:

"Scala support is in development, and it will gradually improve with the time. No deadline for the "full" support"
