David Pollak makes an introduction to Scala showing how basic language constructs like boxing, generics, structural types, tail calls, and others, are used and how they are translated into byte code.

Bio

David Pollak wrote the first real-time spreadsheet and the worlds highest performance spreadsheet engine. As CTO of CMP Media, David oversaw the first large-scale deployment of WebLogic. In 2007, David founded the Lift Web Framework open source project. David is a consultant in San Francisco and works on Lift-based projects including Buy a Feature and ESME.

The 2009 JVM Language Summit is an open technical collaboration among language designers, compiler writers, tool builders, runtime engineers, and VM architects. The talks inform the audience, in detail, about the state of the art of language design and implementation on the JVM, and the present and future capabilities of the JVM itself.
