The types of information we collect:
Our primary goal in collecting personal information is to provide you with the best and most useful content and services. Because we derive revenue mainly from advertising, and our QCon events business, collecting information is essential to keeping our Services free forusers.
Upon registration, we collect personally identifiable information, which includes name, title, city/state, company, industry, and e-mail address, password.
InfoQ also contains ‘related vendor content’ promoted around the site. When you register for content provided by one of our advertisers, we explicitly show who the advertiser is and you may elect to provide the advertiser with personally identifiable information, prior to download.
Use of single pixel gifs:
InfoQ, its third party service providers may use single-pixel gif images, sometimes referred to as web bugs or web beacons, to count Web page accesses and gather some general statistical information. InfoQ does not gather personal information through the use of these images.
InfoQ and our advertisers may send a "cookie" to your computer. A cookie is a small piece of data that is sent to your Internet browser from a Web server and stored on your computer's hard drive. A cookie can't read data off of your computer hard disk or read cookie files created by other Web sites. Cookies do not damage your system.. You can choose whether to accept cookies by changing the settings of your Internet browser. You can reset your browser to refuse all cookies, or allow your browser to show you when a cookie is being sent.
Information we collect from third parties:
We may collect information about you from third party services. For example, we may receive information about you when you interact with our site through various social media, for example, by logging in through or liking us on Facebook or following us on Twitter. The data we receive is dependent upon your privacy settings with the social network. You should always review, and if necessary, adjust your privacy settings on such third-party websites and services before linking or connecting them to our website.
The use of this information:
- To understand our audience and assist in how we explain our audience to our advertisers
- To send you information you agreed to receive such as our electronic newsletter, conference information and information from our advertisers that map to your interests.
- Within the InfoQ.com website - To customize content and advertising to your interests
- Outside of the InfoQ.com domain - to promote InfoQ content, or information about InfoQ events (such as QCon), thru advertising on pages that are part of the Google Ad Display network or on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.
Information We Share With Your Consent:
We will make your personally identifiable information available to advertisers only when we have your consent to share the information, such as when you choose to share your account information and additional information upon downloading a vendor white paper.
You may also access other Third Party Services through our site, for example by clicking on links to websites or other services outside of the Site. We are not responsible for the privacy policies and practices of these Third Party Services.
We aggregate personally identifiable information and disclose such information in a non-personally identifiable manner to advertisers and other third parties for marketing, promotional, and other purposes. We do not disclose to these entities any information that could be used to identify you personally.
User Profile Information:
User profile information including your username and other information you enter may be displayed to other users to facilitate user interaction within the Services. We will not reveal user email addresses to other users of the Site.
Information Shared with Our Service Providers:
We employ and contract with service providers - individuals and entities that perform certain tasks on our behalf (such as email list management software, accounting software, etc). We may need to share Personal Information with our service providers in order to provide products or services to you. We do not authorize our service providers to use Personal Information or other information we share with them beyond what is necessary to assist us. Examples:
Users who would rather not provide any of the user data requested by our registration process do not need to register with us. You can still view much of the content and use many of the services offered by our sites without registering.
We also give users the following options:
- Opting not to receive our electronic newsletters or those of third parties when registering. Users who opt-in may remove themselves from mailing lists at any time through the edit profile pages or by following the instructions at the end of the e-mail they received from us.
- Opting not to provide certain personal information when registering for a site, provided, that you may not be able to utilize certain of our products or services without providing us with certain information.
