Elasticsearch released version 1.0.0 of its self-titled, open-source analytics tool. Elasticsearch is a distributed search engine which allows for real-time data analysis in big-data environments. The new version comes with various functional enhancements and changes to the API to make Elasticsearch more intuitive and powerful to use.

Google have announced general availability of their Cloud SQL service. At launch the service comes with automatic encryption of customer data, a 99.95% uptime SLA and support for databases up to 500GB in size.

HybridCluster announce free non-commercial licenses
HybridCluster have announced a free for non-commercial use license for their cloud hosting platform. The platform supports Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP (LAMP) applications, and provides high availability and auto scaling with a combination of ‘AwesomeProxy’ a proprietary multi-protocol proxy server, lightweight containers and a ZFS based storage fabric.

What's coming in the April 'Icehouse' release of OpenStack
Icehouse, the next release of the OpenStack open source cloud, will be coming in April 2014. Icehouse will bring automated installation (TripleO), bare metal provisioning (Ironic), a queuing and notification service (Marconi) and database as a service (Trove) as integrated services. Better support for Hadoop (Savanna) will be put into incubation.

Xen Project Releases 1.0 of Mirage OS
Mirage OS is a ‘cloud operating system’ that seeks to avoid security vulnerabilities and bloat by facilitating the creation of single purpose virtual appliances. Amazon Web Services announces three new instance types
Amazon Web Services have announced three new instance types for its Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) infrastructure as a service. I2 instances use solid state disk (SSD) to deliver high input/output performance, C3 instances tie each virtual CPU to a hardware hyper-thread for compute intensive workloads, and G2 instances offer Nvidia graphics processing units (GPUs) for 3D applications.

Verizon Launches New Public Cloud
Verizon have launched a new public cloud, which is presently in beta. It differentiates from other public clouds such as Amazon’s EC2 (and Verizon’s own VMware based Terremark service) by offering more granular control over VM sizing, network performance and storage performance – allowing customers to create a customised service level agreement.

Cloud Storage Provider Nirvanix Shutting Down
Cloud storage provider Nirvanix has announced that it is shutting down. Giving customers just a few weeks to migrate their files to other storage providers has called into question the wisdom of using cloud storage services (or indeed any cloud services), particularly from smaller startup providers.

Juniper Launches OpenContrail for Software Defined Networking
Juniper Networks have launched their software defined networking (SDN) solution OpenContrail using the permissive Apache v2 open source software license. This means that there is now an open source alternative to VMware’s NSX solution for SDN, which was launched last month at VMworld.
