VMware Open Source 'Photon Controller' Infrastructure Control Plane at DockerCon EU
At DockerCon EU 2015, VMware made available their Photon Controller as an open source product via the organisation’s GitHub account. The Photon Controller is a component within VMware’s Photon platform that is designed as an infrastructure stack optimised for ‘container and cloud’ workloads. The platform offers an API-first user experience, a scalable control plane, and native container support.

Docker 1.9 Brings Improvements on Networking, Storage and Clustering
Docker Inc. has presented Docker Engine 1.9 at DockerCon EU, which has taken place this month in Barcelona. This new release, which Docker announced at the beginning of the month, includes major changes on networking and volume management. Docker Swarm is ready for production and several improvements were made in Docker Compose, Docker Toolbox and Docker Registry.

Docker Boosts Security on Containers
Docker Inc. has announced a new set of security enhancements at DockerCon EU, celebrated in Barcelona on 16-17th/Nov. These enhancements includes hardware signing of container images, content auditing through image scanning and vulnerability detection and granular access control policies with user namespaces.

Jelastic Joker 4.0 released with Advanced Docker Features
Jelastic, a PaaS and container based IaaS provider, released Joker (Jelastic + Docker) 4.0 with advanced Docker features including horizontal scaling for containers, support for stateful containers with live migration and Docker volumes. The company has made improvements to Docker’s core technology to achieve the features in the Joker release.

HashiCorp Release Nomad Scheduler and Otto Application Delivery Tool
At the inaugural HashiConf conference, held in Portland, USA, HashiCorp announced the release of a new distributed scheduler platform named ‘Nomad’ that is capable of scheduling containers, VMs and standalone applications; and a new application delivery tool named ‘Otto’ that builds upon the existing Vagrant tool by enabling the management of remote application deployments.

Force12.io Create a ‘Microscaling’ Framework for Apache Mesos
Force12.io have released a prototype ‘microscaling’ container demonstration running on the Apache Mesos cluster manager, which they claim starts and stops ‘priority 1’ and ‘priority 2’ containers more rapidly than traditional autoscaling approaches when given a simulated demand for the differing workloads. InfoQ discussed the goals and methodology of this approach with Force12.io’s Ross Fairbanks.

Microsoft and Docker Preview Windows Server Containers
It is now possible to run Windows-specific software inside containers. Windows Server 2016 Technical Preview 3 is the first Windows release to support this technology. Windows Server Containers offer very similar capabilities to Linux containers, but in the context of the Windows ecosystem. Docker also released its own technical preview that showcases how it's able to manage Windows containers.

InfoQ China Establishes Container Technology Club
On August 28, 2015, the first CNUTCon was held in Beijing. At the conference, Kevin Huo, the founder of Geekbang & InfoQ China, announced that InfoQ has joined forces with domestic front-line IT technology companies to establish the CNUT Container Technology Club.
