AWS re:Invent 2017 Announcements: Managed Kubernetes, Serverless RDBMS & DynamoDB Global Tables
At the AWS re:invent 2017 conference, held in Las Vegas, USA, several new compute and storage features were announced, including: EKS, a fully managed Kubernetes service; AWS Fargate, a service to run containers without managing servers; Amazon Aurora Multi-Master; Amazon Aurora Serverless; DynamoDB Global Tables and on-demand backup; and Amazon Neptune, a fully managed graph database.

Oracle Joins CNCF, and Releases Kubernetes on Oracle Linux and Terraform Kubernetes Cloud Installer
At the Open Source Summit, held in Los Angeles, USA, it was announced that Oracle has joined the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) as a Platinum member. Oracle has also released “Kubernetes on Oracle Linux” and an open source HashiCorp Terraform Kubernetes Installer for the Oracle Bare Metal Cloud Infrastructure.

Public Preview of Azure IaaS Disaster Recovery Announced
In a recent announcement, Microsoft released details about its public preview for Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) disaster recovery using Azure Site Recovery (ASR). Using the ASR service, organizations can protect IaaS workloads in one Azure region and have it replicated to a different Azure region within a geographical cluster.

HashiCorp Terraform 0.9. Released with State Locking, State Environments, and Destroy Provisioners
HashiCorp have released Terraform 0.9., which includes: significant improvements to how remote state is managed, including state locking, ‘state environments’ and a new centralised initialisation command ‘terraform init’; destroy provisioners that can be configured run before a resource is destroyed; and resource interrupts, allowing the immediate interrupts to be handled with custom logic.

Kubernetes 1.5 Released with Improved StatefulSets and Alpha Support for Windows Server 2016
The CNCF have released version 1.5 of the Kubernetes container orchestration system. Core improvements focus on beta functionality associated with deployment and scaling of stateful applications, and making it possible to perform cluster operations without disrupting applications. Alpha support has also been added for Windows Server 2016 nodes and the scheduling of Windows Server Containers.

Amazon Launches Lightsail Virtual Private Servers
Amazon has launched Lightsail, a Virtual Private Server (VPS) service to compete with companies like Digital Ocean, Linode and the multitude of Low End Box providers. The service bundles a basic Linux virtual machine with SSD storage and a bandwidth allowance. Pricing starts at $5/month with tiers by RAM allocation. Each larger configuration comes with more storage and bandwidth.

Amazon Releases 'AWS X-Ray' Distributed Tracing Service in Preview
At the AWS re:Invent 2016 conference, held in Las Vegas, USA, a distributed tracing service named AWS X-Ray was released in preview within all 12 public AWS Regions. In a similar fashion to Google’s Dapper, Twitter’s Zipkin and the OpenTracing API, AWS X-Ray helps developers analyse and debug distributed applications, such as those built using a microservices architectural style.

Samsung Acquires Cloud Provider Joyent
Samsung has acquired Joyent, the public cloud provider positioning itself as a container-native cloud platform. The buyout gives Samsung an immediate cloud presence, and the potential to build an integrated back-end platform to support its consumer-facing devices. The biggest attraction for both parties may be the ability to offer an end-to-end experience in the Internet of Things space.

Rancher Labs Release Rancher 1.0, An Open Source Cross-Cloud Container Management Platform
Rancher Labs have released version 1.0 of their open source Rancher container management platform, which allows the deployment of Docker containers via Docker Swarm, Kubernetes or Rancher Labs’ Cattle. Rancher manages the underlying compute fabric, and can be deployed across a combination of multiple public cloud vendors, private virtualised clouds and bare metal.

Verizon's ThingSpace Platform Facilitates Development of New Internet of Things Applications
Verizon has launched a new platform named ThingSpace, the objective of which is to simplify the development and deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) applications. ThingSpace developers can utilize APIs and hardware bundled with developer kits that perform the actual IoT measurements and gather the data for transfer to the analysis platform.
