  • Spring Authorization Server 1.0 Provides Oauth 2.1 and OpenID Connect 1.0 Implementations

    More than two-and-a-half years after being introduced to the Java community, VMWare has released Spring Authorization Server 1.0. Built on top of Spring Security, the Spring Authorization Server project supports the creation of OpenID Connect 1.0 Identity Providers and OAuth 2.1 Authorization Servers. The project supersedes the Spring Security OAuth project which is no longer maintained.

  • Spring Batch 5.0 Delivers JDK 17 Baseline and Support for Native Java

    VMware released Spring Batch 5.0. Baselined to Java 17 and the latest Spring Framework 6.0, Spring Batch now supports GraalVM native image, a new Observation API, Java Records, and a long list of enhancements and fixes made by more than 50 contributors.

  • Java News Roundup: Major Spring Releases, Resilience4j, Open Liberty, GlassFish, Kotlin 1.8-Beta

  • Spring Boot 3 and Spring Framework 6 Use Java 17 and Jakarta EE 9, Support Native Java with GraalVM

    VMware released Spring Framework 6 and Spring Boot 3, a new generation for the Spring ecosystem. Spring Framework 6 requires Java 17 and Jakarta EE 9. It also embeds observability through Micrometer with tracing and metrics. Spring Boot 3 requires Spring Framework 6. It has built-in support for creating native executables through static Ahead-of-Time (AOT) compilation with GraalVM Native Image.

  • Spring Modulith Structures Spring Boot 3 Applications with Modules and Events

    VMware shipped the experimental Spring Modulith project to better structure Spring Boot 3 applications with modules and events. The project introduces new classes and annotations but doesn't generate code. Modules map to Java packages and are encouraged to use Spring events which can be automatically stored in an event log. Spring Modulith also eases the testing of modules and events.

  • Spring Boot 3 Ships November 2022, Delays Java Module Support

    At the 2022 JAX London conference, Spring Developer Advocate Oliver Drotbohm shared the projected release dates for Spring Framework 6 & Spring Boot 3: the end of November 2022. He also pointed out that the new Spring Boot Migrator can migrate a Spring Boot 2.7 application to version 3.0. He later confirmed that full Java Module support won’t arrive in Spring Framework 6.0 but may come later.

  • Introducing Spring Boot Migrator

    Spring Boot Migrator (SBM) is an experimental Spring project first released in March 2022. SBM allows developers to convert existing, non Spring Boot applications, which are based on technologies such as JAX-RS, EJB and JMS to Spring Boot or upgrade older Spring Boot applications to the latest version.

  • JetBrains IntelliJ IDEA 2022.2 Uses Java 17 Runtime

    IntelliJ IDEA 2022.2 uses the JetBrains Runtime 17, a fork of OpenJDK. The latest versions of various languages and frameworks are now supported, such as Scala, Kotlin, Spring 6 and Spring Boot 3.

  • GraalVM 22.2 Adds Library Configuration Repository

    GraalVM is known for compiling Java into small native executables that start much faster than traditional Java programs. Release 22.2 addresses a long-standing pain point by introducing a configuration repository for Java libraries. Native Java compilation uses less memory, and the GraalVM distribution runs better on Apple Silicon and is smaller.

  • Project Leyden Delays OpenJDK AOT Compiler, Optimizes JIT Compiler Instead

    The goal of Project Leyden is to address “Java's slow startup time, slow time to peak performance, and large footprint." It wanted to get there by reintroducing Ahead-of-Time (AOT) compilation into OpenJDK. But it just pivoted to first optimize Just-in-Time (JIT) compilation. Oracle's Graal project has already achieved Project Leyden’s goal, but at a cost that Leyden wants to avoid for now.
