End of Year Learnings from Minecraft’s Migration to JDK 16 and Q&A with the Mojang Team
In an effort to obtain a smoother transition towards JDK 17, Minecraft decided to upgrade to JDK 16 first just months before Java's LTS release in September 2021. The changes point towards possible performance gains just by running JDK 17 out-of-the-box. InfoQ reached out to the Mojang team with further questions on their experience running JDK 16 in production.

Inspired by FlywayDB, the tool supports migrations based on Cypher statements or Java. Triggering the migrations is possible via the CLI, Maven plugin, or a Spring Boot starter.

JetBrains Releases IntelliJ IDEA 2021.3 with New Remote Development Feature
IntelliJ IDEA 2021.3 is the last release for 2021 and now includes support for Groovy 4 and Selenium 4. The release contains bug fixes, generic improvements and more specific improvements for languages and tools like Java, Kotlin, Docker and Kubernetes. This version introduces remote development as a beta feature, to use a remote machine as if it was a local machine.

Spring Boot 2.6 Improves Docker Images and Metrics, Version 2.4 Is EOL
VMware has released Spring Boot 2.6. As the second and last feature release of 2021, it improves Docker image building, provides more health and management information, and allows testing Spring MVC applications with the WebTestClient interface. This release also updates dependencies, such as Spring Security 5.6, Spring Data 2021.1, Spring Kafka 2.8, Hibernate 5.6, Kotlin 1.6, and JUnit 5.8.

Hazelcast Announces a New Unified Platform with Version 5.0

Vulnerability Affecting Multiple Log4j Versions Permits RCE Exploit
On December 9th, it was made public on Twitter that a zero-day exploit had been discovered in log4j, a popular Java logging library. All the library’s versions between 2.0 and 2.14.1 included are affected. Log4j 2.15.0 has been released, which no longer has this vulnerability. As the POC published on GitHub points out, when log4j logs an attacker-controlled string value it can result in an RCE.
