AWS re:Invent Recap
At their annual re:Invent conference in Las Vegas, AWS unleashed a flurry of announcements about upcoming cloud services. Amazon outlined over two dozen new capabilities coming to the public cloud, including directly querying data in S3 object storage, building code as part of deployment pipelines, provisioning cheap virtual private servers, and moving data in bulk, ETL-style.

Amazon Announces AWS Shield for DDoS Protection
At the recent re:Invent 2016 event, Amazon announced a new service called AWS Shield, which provides customers with protection from Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. This announcement comes just over a month after Amazon was impacted by a DDoS attack on a DNS provider that Amazon used, Dynamic Network Services (Dyn).

Amazon's Simple Notification Service (SNS) recently gained worldwide SMS delivery and can now be used in five additional Amazon Web Services (AWS) regions. AWS also added several new features such as opt-out management, direct publishing, delivery status monitoring, and spending limits.

AWS Adds Multi-Cloud Scripting to EC2 Run Command Feature
In late 2015, AWS unveiled the EC2 Run Command feature. It gave operators a single interface for running administrative tasks across a fleet of AWS servers. In June of this year, AWS expanded the scope of the feature to work with servers located in other clouds or data centers.

AWS Launches Massive X1 Instances Targeting High Memory Workloads
AWS recently added a new instance type with nearly 2 terabytes of memory and 128 virtual CPUs. This is the largest virtual server available today in the public cloud, and is a target for memory-intensive workloads such as SAP HANA.

Dropbox Develops Magic Pocket, Moves Away From AWS
On March 14, 2016 Dropbox discussed their migration away from AWS on their blog. The blog post recounts all of the recent activities that have allowed them to achieve their goal of serving 90% of all user data exclusively from their own data centers. The project, named “Magic Pocket”, called for in-house developed software and hardware to be built to support their customer needs.

AWS Launches Relational Database Migration Service
After a brief beta period that saw customers migrate more than 1,000 on-premises databases to the cloud, AWS formally released their Database Migration Service. This on-demand cloud service supports live migration scenarios, and customers who wish to switch their database platform as part of the migration can do so, thanks to a free schema conversion tool.

Meet Grid, The Guardian's Image Management Service
The British newspaper The Guardian has open sourced Grid, their image management service. Grid utilizes numerous modern web-based technologies including AngularJS, Amazon Web Serivces, and ElasicSearch using ECMAScript 6 and Scala. Build by a small developer team over the past 11 months, it is currently used in production and available under a liberal open source license.

New Amazon DynamoDB Streams Enable Triggers, Cross-Region Replication
AWS updated DynamoDB with the ability to publish near real-time notifications of data changes. This new capability – called DynamoDB Streams – spawned two additional features for the NoSQL database-as-a-service: DynamoDB Triggers fire based on specific data changes found in a DynamoDB Stream, and cross-region replication is driven by a DynamoDB Streams-based architecture.

Amazon Releases Cloud Drive SDK for Android and iOS
A new SDK from Amazon will make it possible for Android and iOS developers to support Amazon Cloud Drive in their apps, says David Isbitski, principal evangelist at Amazon.
