  • Structure 2015 - State of the Cloud and Container Ecosystems

    Rising from the ashes of GigaOm the tribal gathering of cloud elders that is Structure has returned, and got off to a strong start with Battery Ventures' Adrian Cockcroft presenting on the State of the Cloud and Container Ecosystems. Cockcroft paid particular attention to the impact of containers, which wasn’t even a major discussion topic at the last Structure conference in 2013.

  • Introducing Azure Service Fabric

    In April 2015 at the Build conference in San Francisco, Microsoft introduced an Azure service called Service Fabric. Azure Service Fabric is a platform that allows customers to build distributed applications without having to manage a complex infrastructure deployment. The service is currently in developer preview as of May 2015 and a general availability release is expected in early 2016.

  • Microsoft Announces Azure Premium Messaging Preview

    In early September, Microsoft announced a premium tier preview to its messaging offering known as Azure Service Bus Premium Messaging. The premium service includes existing cloud based messaging capabilities, such as Queues and Topics, but delivers them over dedicated infrastructure in order to provide a consistent experience for customers.

  • Dropbox API v2 Launched for Swift, Python, .NET, and Java

    Dropbox has announced its API v2, which supports four SDKs: Swift, Python, .NET, and Java, is generally available to developers. According to Dropbox, Dropbox API v2 is “simpler, more consistent, and more comprehensive”. Currently, API v2 does not support JavaScript and Objective-C.

  • Twistlock Announce General Availability of Container Security Suite

    Twistlock have announced the general availability of their Container Security Suite, along with a partnership with Google Cloud Platform that integrates Twistlock into Google Container Engine (GKE). The suite consists of a console to define policy, a registry scanner and a ‘Defender’that runs as a privileged container on each host.

  • Google to Provide Integration between Cloud Logs and Cloud Monitoring Services

    Google recently announced they are adding features to its cloud platform that will enable integration between its cloud-based log service and its cloud monitoring service. The intent of providing these capabilities is to allow customers to efficiently move between the Cloud Logging and Cloud Monitoring services when discovering the health of their own services.

  • Pivotal Cloud Foundry Adds Netflix OSS Services, Docker Support

    Today, Pivotal announced an update to Pivotal Cloud Foundry (PCF), the commercial version of a popular open-source platform for building, deploying, and running cloud-native applications. This 1.6 release gives developers native access to a subset of Spring Cloud’s Netflix OSS services, built-in support for .NET applications, beta support for Docker images, and integrated ALM tools.

  • Amazon Releases Kinesis Firehose

    Recently, on October 7th, 2015, Amazon announced a new service called Amazon Kinesis Firehose. Kinesis Firehose is a follow-up service to the Kinesis service which was released two years ago. In order to avoid ambiguity, the original Kinesis service has been renamed to Amazon Kinesis Streams.

  • DigitalOcean Adds Floating IPs

    DigitalOcean recently introduced floating IPs that can be manually reassigned to any Droplet – what DigitalOcean calls a virtual machine – within a data center. While neither novel nor a standalone high-availability solution, this service fills a gap for the fast-growing cloud provider.

  • Docker Acquires Tutum

    Docker Inc have announced their acquisition of Tutum, ‘The Docker Platform for Dev and Ops’ that allows users to ‘Build, deploy, and manage your apps across any cloud’. The rationale for the deal is to complement Docker Hub, which takes care of ‘build’ and ‘ship’, with Tutum as the platform for ‘run’.

  • Microsoft AzureCon Keynote Announcements

    On Thursday, October 1st Microsoft made several announcements regarding their Azure Platform. These announcement include 3 new Azure regions in India, GPU support, Security Center, IoT Suite and Container Service.

  • Amazon Launches IoT Platform Beta

    At Amazon’s recent re:Invent developer conference in Las Vegas, the company announced a new Internet of Things (IoT) platform called AWS IoT.

  • AWS Unveils 2TB X1 and T2.Nano EC2 Instances

    At its re:Invent conference, Amazon Web Services has unveiled two new instance types for its EC2 service: X1, sporting 2TB of memory, and T2.Nano, aimed to the lower end of compute requirements.

    Amazon has published the AWS Well-Architected Framework, a guide for architecting solutions for AWS, with design principles that apply to systems running on AWS or other clouds.
