Startup Afero Platform Addresses Internet of Things Communications Security

Tech startup Afero has launched a new platform that addresses both hardware and software necessities for securely connecting the internet of things (IoT). The platform interfaces IoT devices with a secure Bluetooth smart module, which communicates with a mobile phone that interfaces with the Afero cloud. All communications between the Bluetooth smart module node and the cloud are encrypted.

BBC MicroBit Aims to Make Computing Cool for Kids

Yesterday the BBC unveiled the final plans for the BBC MicroBit, a system-on-a-chip-on-a-board with a 5x5 LED matrix aimed at getting children interested in programming. Announced in March 2015, the BBC MicroBit is now finalised and will be given to children in year 7 across the UK, and available for purchase towards the end of 2015. InfoQ looks at what it will provide.

Azul Announces Zulu Embedded, based on OpenJDK

Java ME 8.1 on 256KB RAM

Oracle has released Java ME Embedded 8.1 Early Access #3, which supports the Freescale FRDM-K64F board running the mbed RTOS. The Freescale FRDM-K64F is an ultra-low-cost hardware and development platform which utilizes Kinetis K64 MCUs based on ARM Cortex-M4 cores. This early access release adds support for the ARM Cortex-M architecture.
