AWS IoT FleetWise Now Generally Available

Bookmarks

AWS recently announced the general availability (GA) of its fully managed IoT FleetWise service, allowing customers to easily collect, transform, and transfer vehicle data to the cloud.

The company previewed AWS IoT FleetWise during re:Invent 2021 and released the service after collecting customer feedback and enhancements for various use cases of near-real-time vehicle data processing.

Automakers, fleet operators, and automotive suppliers can use AWS IoT FleetWise to enable data interoperability across vehicle models and components. The service allows them to access standardized fleet-wide vehicle data and avoid developing custom data collection systems. In addition, they are also able to integrate with AWS IoT FleetWise to enhance their existing systems. Furthermore, they can leverage the data to analyze vehicle fleet health to quickly identify potential maintenance issues or make in-vehicle infotainment systems smarter. And finally, the data could also be used to train machine learning (ML) models that improve autonomous driving and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

AWS IoT FleetWise includes a vehicle modeling framework for modeling vehicles’ sensors and actuators in the cloud. Furthermore, it provides Edge Agent software (a C++ application distributed as source code available on GitHub) that users can download and install in their vehicle to enable secure communication between the vehicle and the cloud. Subsequently, users define data collection schemes in the cloud and deploy them to their vehicles. The data collection schemes used by the Edge Agent software in the vehicle control what data is collected and when it is transferred to the cloud.

AWS principal developer advocate Channy Yun explains in an AWS news blog:

The AWS IoT FleetWise Edge Agent running in your vehicle uses data collection schemes to control what data to collect and when to transfer it to the cloud. Data collected and ingested through AWS IoT FleetWise Edge Agent software goes directly into your Amazon Timestream table or Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) repositories via AWS IoT Core.

Mike Tzamaloukas, general manager of IoT automotive at AWS, explains in an AWS press release the need for IoT FleetWise in the automotive industry:

Automotive companies want to use the broad portfolio of AWS services to help manage the vast amounts of data coming from connected vehicles, but they have lacked a solution that made it easier to collect, transform, and transfer data to the cloud. Now, with AWS IoT FleetWise, customers can easily pinpoint the exact vehicle data they need and analyze it in a standardized format to gain actionable insights into the vehicle’s health status and performance. Automotive companies can now use the data extracted through AWS IoT FleetWise to help improve vehicle quality, safety, and autonomy.

AWS IoT FleetWise is currently available in the US East (N. Virginia) and Europe (Frankfurt) regions. Pricing-wise, customers pay for the vehicles they have created and messages per vehicle per month, and additional services, like AWS IoT Core and Amazon Timestream, are billed separately. More details on pricing are available on the pricing page, and details of the service through the documentation page.
