Visual Studio Support for CPython
Microsoft Technical Computing Group has just announced the Python Tools for Visual Studio (PTVS) open source project. PTVS improves on the IronPython Tools for Visual Studio code base (introduced in IronPython 2.7) and adds CPython, Cluster support and new modules like NumPy and SciPy in .Net.

Jetbrains announced appCode (CIDR) EAP - an Objective-C IDE for Mac and iOS development
AppCode is a complete Objective-C IDE for iOS and MacOS development, providing smart editors, debugging, refactoring, quick-fixes, version control integration, Interface Builder, Simulator and XCode interoperability. Available now as Early Accesss Program with 30 day license.

Cloud IDE for Java Launched by eXo
eXo has announced the launch of a new Cloud IDE, which is based on a hosted development environment that facilitates social coding, the collaborative development of gadgets and mashups that can be deployed directly to any Java PaaS. This includes multi-tenancy, social and collaboration features.

Orion – Eclipse for the Web
Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director of the Eclipse Foundation, announced in January a new tool named “Orion”. This “brand new adventure for Eclipse”, as Mike puts it, will provide a browser-based environment for open tool integration. Beginning of February the team released milestone M5 of Orion.

Ruby Dropped in Netbeans 7
Ruby/RoR in NetBeans made headlines three years ago, but after Sun was acquired by Oracle there where fears that support for dynamic languages would suffer, as this IDE would be downsized. This has become a reality, since as of version 7, NetBeans will no longer support Ruby.

Appcelerator Buys Aptana
Appcelerator, the company behind the Titanium application development platform, has acquired Aptana. Aptana Studio 3, the Eclipse-based IDE with tightly integrated support for JavaScript, HTML, CSS, Ruby, Python and PHP, is due to be released this quarter.

MonoDevelop is the Third IDE for F#
MonoDevelop has become the third IDE to support Microsoft’s F# language. With .NET support essentially dead on the Eclipse IDE and WebMatrix being targeted for causal developers, it is likely to be the last IDE to add support for it in the foreseeable future.

JetBrains Releases Intellij IDEA 10
This month, JetBrains announced it released Intellij IDEA 10, a major upgrade to its integrated development environment. As a major revision, the new Intellij has a long list of changes and improvements. A selection of the improvements include: performance improvements, enhanced support for various frameworks and technologies, improved version control support.

The Much Needed Service Pack for VS 2010 is Almost Ready
Visual Studio 2010’s first service pack is nearing completion. According to Brian Harry, the betas for .NET 4 SP1, VS 2010 SP1, and TFS 2010 SP1 together represent between 800 and 1,000 bug fixes. Also included is a new help system and improved support for Silverlight, x64, and .NET 3.5.

Microsoft’s WebMatrix Now Shipping with PHP 5.3 and PEAR
The third beta of Microsoft’s WebMatrix IDE was released this month with significantly improved support for PHP. This round brings the option to choose between PHP 5.2 and 5.3 as well as support for PEAR, the PHP Extension and Application Repository.

A New Attempt at Making Boo a First Class Language

Adobe Releases ActionScript Code Coverage Plug-in for Flash Builder
Adobe has made available a prerelease of an ActionScript Code Coverage Plug-in for Flash Builder, which aims to help developers understand exactly what code is executed while an application is running. When added to Flash Builder, the plug-in provides a new Eclipse perspective that allows you to start the code coverage tool.

Google Relaunches Instantiations Tools
Having acquired Instantations Java tooling arm last month, Google has now released their tools for free via the Google WebToolkit project. This includes the high-quality WindowBuilder Pro, which can create GUIs in SWT, Swing and GWT, as well as GWT Designer for rapid GWT development, CodePro AnalytiX for automated software quality, and WindowTester Pro for automated UI testing.

Amethyst, a Flex IDE for Microsoft Visual Studio Released
Amethyst is a fully-featured Visual Studio IDE for the Adobe Flash Platform. It supports the drag-and-drop design, editing and debugging of Flex and AIR applications and it can also load Flash IDE projects for editing and debugging.
