First Rails 3 Beta Released

The first beta of Rails 3 is available. Rails 3 is a major rewrite of the codebase bringing with it stable APIs and design decisions inspired by Merb, cleaner internals, performance improvements and much more. InfoQ takes a look at the changes in Rails 3, and on which Ruby implementations it runs.

Rails 2.3.3 Released and the State of Rails 3.0 and Merb

Rails 2.3.3 is now available. Among the usual bug fixes, it adds a few new features like ActiveRecord touch functionality and some JSON related API changes. Also: a look at what's up with Rails 3 and Merb 1.1.

Ruby VM Roundup: Ruby 1.9.2 Preview 1, Ruby Versions Site

Ruby 1.9.2 Preview 1 is now available and brings API improvements such as Method#parameters, GC optimization for long lived objects, and more. Also: to keep up to speed with Ruby implementations, David A. Black announced ruby-versions.net which provides a long list of MRI versions as well as JRuby, Rubinius and REE installations.

Rack 1.0 Released

While JRuby on Rails doesn't have ActiveRecord, DataMapper, an ORM often used with Merb, has gained a new adapter for Google App Engine's DataStore. Also: work on Reggae, automatic tooling for deploying Rack apps on GAE is under way.

Merb Will Be Merged Into Rails 3.0

Big news for Ruby web frameworks: Merb and Rails will be merged in Rails 3.0. The merge will bring some of Merb's characteristics to Rails: a defined public API, ability to run a barebones version rails-core (like merb-core) with further functionality available in the form of plugins, performance improvements and more.

NewRelic announced a cooperation with the Rails Core team to improve Rails performance. An opt-in feature allows to make performance data available to the Rails Core team, which can use it to figure out Rails bottlenecks in real world Rails apps. Also: FiveRuns' TuneUp performance monitoring tools now supports Merb.

Ruby pops up in some recent software provided or used by Apple. The iPhone Configuration Web Utility for Enterprises is built on Rails. SproutCore, which powers the client side of Apple's MobileMe, uses Ruby for tooling and Merb for static content generation.

YARD - Code Metadata And Documentation Generation for Ruby

YARD is an extensible tool to provide metadata about Ruby code using Javadoc-style meta tags. The metadata includes optional type annotations using either type names or structural type information. We look at YARD and how Merb and the Ruby In Steel IDE use similar approaches for optional type annotations.
