  • AWS re:Invent 2017 ML and IoT Announcements: Amazon SageMaker, AWS DeepLens & IoT Device Manager

    At the AWS re:invent conference 2017, held in Las Vegas, USA, several new AWS machine learning (ML) and Internet of Things (IoT) products were released. Highlights include Amazon SageMaker - a fully-managed ML service that enables developers to “quickly build, train, and host ML models”; and IoT Device Manager - a service to securely onboard, monitor, and remotely manage IoT devices at scale.

  • AWS re:Invent 2017 Announcements: Managed Kubernetes, Serverless RDBMS & DynamoDB Global Tables

    At the AWS re:invent 2017 conference, held in Las Vegas, USA, several new compute and storage features were announced, including: EKS, a fully managed Kubernetes service; AWS Fargate, a service to run containers without managing servers; Amazon Aurora Multi-Master; Amazon Aurora Serverless; DynamoDB Global Tables and on-demand backup; and Amazon Neptune, a fully managed graph database.

    Monzo, the digital, mobile-only bank based in the UK, recently suffered outages in their current account payments and prepaid debit cards systems. Oliver Beattie, Monzo’s head of engineering, took on Monzo’s community forum to provide a post mortem of the outage. In this article, we describe their architecture, the root cause of the outage and the lessons learned from it.

  • Microsoft Introduces Azure Availability Zones, Completes MAREA Transatlantic Connection

    In a recent blog post, Microsoft announced the expansion of High Availability (HA) and resiliency options for customers. The update comes in the form of Azure Availability Zones which increase the availability of certain Azure services within a specific region by providing complete redundancy and isolation of the infrastructure. Azure Availability Zones include a financially-backed SLA of 99.99%.

  • Microsoft Adds Root Cause Analysis and Time Exploration Updates to Azure Time Series Insights

    This past April, Microsoft announced updates to their Azure Internet of Things (IoT) platform. One of the announcements that InfoQ has been tracking includes the emergence of Azure Time Series Insights (TSI). Microsoft’s Time Series Insights service is currently in public preview and Microsoft has recently added new features including Root Cause Analysis and updates to Time Exploration.

  • Microsoft Releases More Azure Stack Details, Available September

    At the recent Microsoft Inspire partner conference, Microsoft announced Azure Stack is now available for order and will ship as soon as September. Azure Stack is a private cloud implementation of Microsoft’s public Azure cloud. Unlike other private cloud providers, Microsoft is offering Azure Stack as a consumption-based service, similar to its public cloud counterpart.

  • AWS Greengrass Runs Lambda Functions on IoT Devices

    Amazon has made available AWS Greengrass, a solution that allows developers to run Lambda functions on IoT devices and enable devices to communicate to each other and the cloud.

  • Google Joins IoT Race, Launches Cloud IoT Core Private Beta

    In a recent blog post, Google announced a private beta of their Google IoT Core platform. Within this IoT platform, customers will be able to securely connect devices to Google Cloud Platform (GCP) where other data analytics services can be integrated. Customers can then use this data to provide actionable insight for their organization in order to drive better business results.

  • Google Invests in Cognitive: Cloud Speech API Reaches General Availability

    In a recent blog post, Google announced their Cloud Speech API has reached General Availability. The Cloud Speech API allows developers to include pre-trained machine learning models for cognitive tasks such as video, image and text analysis in addition to dynamic translation. The Cloud Speech API was launched, in open beta, last summer.

  • Microsoft Updates Azure IoT Platform: Adds Connectivity, Time Series Insights and Edge Analytics

    Microsoft has recently made some announcements regarding their Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities within Azure. Microsoft’s news includes adding a new service called Azure Time Series Insights, additional connectivity platform support for OPC UA/DA and Azure Stream Analytic support on edge devices. In addition, Microsoft also announced a new SaaS-based IoT Solution called Azure IoT Central.

  • A Human Error Took Down AWS S3 US-EAST-1

    A mistake took down more S3 servers than it should, including two subsystems essential to S3 operation. This resulted in S3 failure, affecting the S3 service and other services depending on it. Normal functioning was restored in about four hours.

    MindMeld, a conversational AI company, has published The Conversational AI Playbook, a guide outlining the challenges and the steps to be made to create conversational applications.

  • Microsoft Launches Cloud Bot-as-a-Service Platform

    This past November, Microsoft launched, what it is calling, the Industry’s First Cloud Bot-as-a-Service platform. The Azure Bot Service is powered by the Microsoft Bot Framework and has a serverless compute back-end built on Azure Functions. Using the Bot service allows developers to build conversational applications that plug into many popular chat applications.

  • Google Expands Reach to Enterprise with Machine Learning APIs

    Enterprise cloud usage has been in the forefront of big players for the past few years. Amazon, IBM, Google and Microsoft are expanding their offerings to serve better the enterprise users and their needs. Google announced a set of machine learning based services focused on enterprise users.

  • Building Conversational and Text Interfaces Using Amazon Lex

    At the recent AWS re:Invent conference, Amazon introduced a preview of their deep learning technology called Amazon Lex which can be used to build conversational interfaces using voice and text. Amazon Lex is powered on the same deep learning technology as Alexa, which is used in the portable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled Amazon Echo speaker.
