Is edge computing the next frontier? Possibly. Once you get past the inevitable hype, you can see the value of processing data streams across distributed compute pools. If you view edge as an evolution of both infrastructure and application architecture, you recognize that our existing practices need an upgrade. How should we design systems that run in a disconnected state? How do we deploy changes to hundreds or thousands of locations? Should management be centralized or distributed? How do we minimize unnecessary network traffic and bandwidth spikes? What’s the right infrastructure stack to drop into edge locations?

Proactive answers to these questions may determine whether you’re successful or not with your edge strategy.

In this series of InfoQ articles, we take a look at multiple dimensions of the edge story. We review considerations for virtual and physical security. Another piece explores the data streaming aspects of edge that are more about “how” and not “where.” We also explore the dynamics of constantly-changing edge systems, and how cloud-based edge services are lowering the barrier for experimentation. This series of InfoQ articles helps architects, developers, and operations staff make more informed decisions on their journey towards edge.

Is Edge Computing a Thing?

Edge Computing is definitely a thing, but the computing need not occur at the edge. Instead what is needed is an ability to compute (anywhere) on streaming data from large numbers of dynamically changing devices, in the edge environment. This in turn demands an architectural pattern for stateful, distributed computing.

Deploying Edge Cloud Solutions without Sacrificing Security

Security challenges exist with edge cloud solutions. Some are technical, and some relate to the way in which these services are used. This article looks at the why, what, and how of edge security.
