The second annual JakartaOne Livestream virtual conference, scheduled within less than a month after the formal GA releases of Jakarta EE 9 and MicroProfile 4.0, will go live on December 8th, 2020, with the first of 12 one-hour sessions starting at 6:00am EST. Focused on Jakarta EE- and MicroProfile-related topics, these sessions include keynotes, 15-minute theme slots and panel discussions delivered by a host of Java luminaries. Categories for this year's event were defined as: Jakarta EE 9/10, MicroProfile 4.0, GlassFish 6.0, Java, individual Jakarta EE specifications and showcase applications development with Jakarta EE.

The JakartaOne Livestream 2020 program committee includes: Will Lyons, senior director of Enterprise Cloud Native Java Product Management at Oracle; Rabea Gransberger, software engineer at MEKOS; Ivan Ivanov, co-founder and senior programmer at VIDA Software; Michael Redlich, senior research technician at a petrochemical research organization and senior Java Queue news editor at InfoQ; Ivar Grimstad, Jakarta EE developer advocate at Eclipse; and Tanja Obradovic, Jakarta EE program manager at the Eclipse Foundation.

Notable speakers for the one-hour sessions include: Sebastian Daschner, lead Java developer advocate at IBM; Steve Millidge, CEO at Payara; Emily Jiang, Liberty microservice architect and advocate at IBM; Reza Rahman, principal program manager, Java on Azure at Microsoft; Adam Bien, Java SE/EE freelancer and author of several books; Cesar Hernandez, senior software engineer at Tomitribe.

The opening keynote, scheduled for 12:00pm EST, will be delivered by Mike Milinkovich, executive director at the Eclipse Foundation. An industry keynote follows with a panel of Jakarta EE vendors such as Tomitribe, IBM, Payara and Red Hat. After the keynotes, Otavio Santana, developer relations engineer at Platform.sh, will moderate a Jakarta EE 10 roundtable at 1:00pm EST. Participants will be Millidge (Payara), Kevin Sutter (IBM), Dmitry Kornilov (Oracle), David Blevins (Tomitribe) and Scott Stark (Red Hat).

Before pandemic-induced on-line virtual conferences, the inaugural JakartaOne Livestream 2019, designed to be a global event, was held on September 10th, 2019, in conjunction with the formal release of Jakarta EE 8. This was an experiment originated by Reza Rahman who led last year's program committee. Speaking to InfoQ before last year's conference, he was asked about the differences in coordinating a virtual event to a more traditional in-person event, he said:

The core spirit of running a conference is essentially the same - learning. You still basically need to do the same stuff - outline a vision, select content, construct the program, manage the event, register attendees and get the word out. I think the primary difference is not needing to deal with a physical venue. That said, you still need to do vendor management of the online platform itself. For our goals, virtual was the right choice. It will help us reach a broad developer base faster.

Since then, other regional JakartaOne-related events were held including: JakartaOne Japan 2020, C4NJ 2020, Brazil 2020 and JakartaOne in Spanish 2020. Presentations from all these events are available to view on-line.

Jakarta EE 9 and JakartaOne Livestream 2020, originally scheduled for September 16th, 2020, were delayed due to finalizing all of the Jakarta EE 9 specifications. With a rescheduled release date of November 20th, 2020, it was recently decided to formally release Jakarta EE 9 in conjunction with JakartaOne Livestream 2020 on December 8th, 2020.

Originally scheduled for a June 2020 release, MicroProfile 4.0 was delayed until an Eclipse Working Group was established as mandated by the Eclipse Foundation. MicroProfile 4.0 will be released this month.

As specified in the Jakarta EE 9 release plan, developers can expect a stable tooling release from which: tooling vendors can support the new jakarta package namespace; development teams can test migration of their applications to the new namespace; and runtime vendors can test and deliver options and capabilities that support migration and backwards compatibility with Jakarta EE 8. Jakarta EE 9 may also be considered a foundation for innovation to drive new features in Jakarta EE 10 and beyond.

JakartaOne Livestream 2020 is a free event, but registration is required.
