Nice talk! Regarding the positive/negative metrics and experiments design planning, I think that Software Engineering already has a quite vast literature in this topic. It can be said that it begun about two decades ago with Goal/Question/Metric paradigm, and has been evolved since them. It was initially conceived and applied in real software projects with the Experience Factory approach, but now it is mostly used in academic experiments and studies. "Making Software: What Really Works, and Why We Believe It" is a recent book which shows some applications of it. In addition, there many books specifically about GQM.
