Orion – Eclipse for the Web
Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director of the Eclipse Foundation, announced in January a new tool named “Orion”. This “brand new adventure for Eclipse”, as Mike puts it, will provide a browser-based environment for open tool integration. Beginning of February the team released milestone M5 of Orion.

Nuxeo Contributes Core to Eclipse Foundation
Nuxeo, the open source enterprise content management company, announced that it will contribute their Nuxeo Core Java content repository technology to the Eclipse Foundation. Although already open-source under the LGPL, the move to Eclipse will see it relicensed to EPL.

Appcelerator Buys Aptana
Appcelerator, the company behind the Titanium application development platform, has acquired Aptana. Aptana Studio 3, the Eclipse-based IDE with tightly integrated support for JavaScript, HTML, CSS, Ruby, Python and PHP, is due to be released this quarter.

Google Donates WindowBuilder Pro and CodePro AnalytiX to Eclipse
Following on from Google's acquisition of Instantiations and their relaunch of WindowBuilder products, Google has announced that they are donating WindowBuilder Pro and CodePro Profiler to Eclipse.org, with an intention to release simultaneously with Eclipse Indigo in June 2011.

Bundle.update: Towards the Next OSGi Release

Eclipse Mylyn Becomes Top Level Project
The Eclipse Mylyn project has been promoted to a top level Eclipse project under the banner of Application Lifecycle Management tools (though the Mylyn name is being kept as a short name). There is a project charter which explains its purpose in the ecosystem. Included is a new direction for review-based tools and hooking into build systems.

Google Relaunches Instantiations Tools
Having acquired Instantations Java tooling arm last month, Google has now released their tools for free via the Google WebToolkit project. This includes the high-quality WindowBuilder Pro, which can create GUIs in SWT, Swing and GWT, as well as GWT Designer for rapid GWT development, CodePro AnalytiX for automated software quality, and WindowTester Pro for automated UI testing.

Tasktop Agile Planner for Eclipse Released
Tasktop has released an Agile planning tool that leverages MyLyn connectors to provide planning support that spans across multiple project management integrations like Mingle, Team Concert, Rally, Scrumworks,JIRA and VersionOne. The Eclipse integration supports automatic linking between plan items and source code artifacts allowing developers to create and manage plans directly from Eclipse.

ast week, the Eclipse Foundation released Eclipse 4.0 Early Adopter SDK. This shouldn't be confused with the production-ready Eclipse Helios release (aka Eclipse 3.6). Rather, Eclipse 4.0 is a sneak preview of what Eclipse will look like in the future.

Oracle Fixes Eclipse's Java Problem
As reported last week, Oracle reacted swiftly to the issues involving the rebranding of the Java 6u21 update. Since then, Oracle have re-spun the Java install, and for Windows machines, the released build is now 1.6.0_21-b07. Oracle should be commended for reacting to, and solving, the problem so quickly.
