During the recent AWS Summit in San Francisco, AWS announced the general availability of its IoT TwinMaker service – AWS IoT TwinMaker.
Last year, the company first released a preview of AWS IoT TwinMaker during the re:Invent conference as a service that makes it faster and easier to create digital twins of real-world systems and use them to monitor and optimize industrial operations. Now it's generally available with new features such as motion indicator(preview), scene templatization, and API improvements. Furthermore, the service is available in additional AWS regions.
A digital twin is a virtual representation that serves as the real-time digital counterpart of a physical object or process. Examples of digital twins are buildings, factories, industrial equipment, and production lines. With AWS IoT TwinMaker, customers will have a service to build digital twins using existing data from multiple sources, create virtual representations of any physical environment, and combine existing 3D models with real-world data.
Channy Yun, a principal developer advocate for AWS, explains in an AWS News blog post:
AWS IoT TwinMaker has capabilities for each stage of the digital twin building process: collecting data from diverse data sources using connectors (components), connecting to data where it lives to represent your digital twins, and combining existing 3D visual models with real-world data using a scene composition tool, and building web-based applications using a plug-in for Grafana and Amazon Managed Grafana that you can use to create dashboards.

Digital Twin Technological was named one of the top ten critical technology trends for 2017 by Gartner Inc. It predicts that every industrial product will have a dynamic digital representation under the Digital Twin idea, which depicts the confluence of the physical and virtual worlds. Moreover, it will mean that organizations may have a thorough digital footprint of their goods throughout the product development life cycle.
Michael MacKenzie, general manager, IoT at AWS, said in a recent AWS press release on IoT TwinMaker:
With AWS IoT TwinMaker, customers can now derive previously unavailable insights about their operations that inform real-time improvements to their buildings, factories, industrial equipment, and production lines and make accurate predictions about system behavior with minimal effort.
In addition, Sukhjinder, working at Cloud Services & Solutions, stated in a tweet:
With #AWS #IoT TwinMaker, you can build digital twins of real-world systems to create a holistic view of your business with less time & effort. Twinning is winning!
AWS IoT TwinMaker is currently available in the US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), Europe (Ireland and Frankfurt), and Asia Pacific (Singapore and Sydney) regions. Furthermore, customers can perform 50 million data access API calls for free as part of the AWS Free Tier and pay the prices mentioned on the pricing page when their free usage expires, or program usage surpasses the free tier.
Lastly, more service details and guidance are available on the documentation pages, FAQs, and built-out sample digital twin of a cookie factory, complete with simulated data connectors in a GitHub repository.
